Vejer - Things to do
The great pleasure of Vejer is to walk the streets of the old town, taking in monuments like the church of El Divino Salvador - built on the site of a mosque what remains of the old Alcázar (fortress) and the lovely, palm tree-lined Plaza de España. The town walls have been incorporated into houses, but half a dozen impressive gates are there to stroll through, and the winding, up and down streets, cobbled, flower-filled patios and cube-shaped houses all act as reminders that you could only be in Andalucía. For information on the town and surrounding area contact the tourist office on Calle Marqués de Tamarón (Tel: 0034 956 450 191) or try www.vejer.com. Outside the town, there are nature trails through the marshlands and around the hamlet of Santa Lucia, near the foot of the outcrop. The big attraction, though, is the coast and its glorious beaches, less than 10km away. Cape Trafalgar (off which Nelson achieved his great sea victory) is here, with seemingly endless stretches of sand or sheltered coves spreading out for miles either side of the point and its lighthouse.
