Vejer - Interesting Facts
One of the town's gates, the Arco de Puerta Cerrada, protected the old Jewish quarter and was kept closed for 200 years between the 10th and 12th centuries because the residents feared attack by Barbary Coast pirates. Until the 1930s, most Vejer women wore the cobijado, a dark cloak covering the whole body and all the face apart from the eyes - a relic of centuries of Moorish rule. Vejer is renowned for its sweetmeats and honey. The town is twinned with Chefchaouen in Morocco.
