Murcia - Interesting Facts
- Murcia was named Musiyah by the Moors; it is believed the name was derived from morus, the latin for mulberry tree, which once flourished throughout the area
- Murcia’s main festival is in early September, when commercial life in the city gives way to a fortnight of almost non-stop partying, processions and drinking and eating.
- The city’s Holy Week processions are famous throughout Spain. Life-sized 18th century sculptures by local favourite Francisco Salzillo are taken out of museums and carried around the city in processions full of flowers and, at night, candles.
- Famous Murcianos include Salzillo, Juan de la Cierva, 19th century inventor of the autogyro (a forerunner of the helicopter), cyclists Alejandro Valverde and Luis León Sanchez and tennis player Nicolas Almagro
- The city is twinned with Miami
