Lebrija - Interesting Facts
Lebrija hosts a unique festival on St John’s Eve every June, when the festivities of Juás take place. Locals make life-size rag dolls representing national figures and local politicians and they are left outside houses to be admired before being set alight as the town’s fireworks display gets underway at midnight. Elio Antonio de Lebrija, the 15th century scholar who wrote the first Spanish grammar treatise, was born in the town, as was Juan Díaz de Solís, an explorer and navigator who named the Rio de la Plata (River Plate) in South America. In more modern times, Juan Ramón López Caro, a recent Real Madrid coach, was born in Lebrija. The bell-tower of Santa María de la Oliva is called the Giraldilla and modelled on Seville’s famous Giralda cathedral tower.
