Lebrija History
The Phoenicians founded the town as Lepriptza, though there is evidence of a Bronze Age settlement in the area. Later incarnations were Nebrissa (Iberians), Nerissa Veneria (Romans) and Nebrisha (Moors) before King Alfonso the Wise finally banished his foes in the 13th century and gave the town its current name. Prosperity followed through agriculture, though in the mid-19th and early 20th century a strong anarchist faction forced eventual agrarian reform which redistributed the lands of absentee landlords. This was done away with by Franco’s victory in the Civil War but the Jornalero (peasants without land) movement which was active from the 1970s secured a fairer system for local workers. Today much of the town’s income still derives from bodegas producing sherry-type wine and olive farming.
