The Costa de la Luz or the coast of light, stretches from the Portuguese border in the north and ends at Tarifa and the Costa del Sol in the south. It is one of the largest Spanish Costa's, yet remains relatively unknown.
Much of this coast is actually protected national parkland and includes the world famous Donana National Park and the Parque Natural Los Alcornocales which covers over 42,000 acres. There are also many protected marine parks.
The 2 provinces that make up the Costa de la Luz are Huelva in the north and Cadiz further south. Both of these provinces are within the greater area of Andalucia. Whilst on the subject of cities, this coast also boasts Seville, Jerez and Gibraltar. So whether you want to experience authentic flamenco in Seville, sip sherry in Jerez or even to take advantage of duty free shopping in Gibraltar the choice is there.

One of the major selling points of the Costa de la Luz has to be the coastline. We guarantee you have never seen so many empty Spanish beaches, made up of pristine white sand, backed by protected sand dunes and not a high rise in site, nor likely to be.
As this is the Atlantic coast, the weather is not as severe as the Mediterranean can be. For example, although the summers are hot, you do not get the intense Mediterranean heat. Here the Atlantic breezes cool the air. The winters are also very mild, with the province of Huelva being famous for it's winter strawberries. Many people are surprised by the "greenness" of this coast. This is due to the moisture carried by the air from the sea and the abundance of rivers and lakes, that criss-cross the landscape, something that many of us are not familiar with or used to in southern Spain and lets not forget that this is the most southern part of Spain. Only 16 kms from Tarifa to
Morroco.

Another wonderful aspect of this area, are the famous ancient moorish white washed towns, such as Vejer de la Frontera and Medina Sidonia as well as the fascinating Pueblos Blancos or white villages that dot the Andalucian countryside, where time seems to have stood still.
